Lecture by Mr Roel Jacobs – ‘The cathedral, a religious and political building?’ / ‘De kathedraal een religieus en politiek gebouw?’

Saturday 13/06/2026 (bilingual Fr/Nl)

Speaker: Mr Roel Jacobs (writer, historian and lecturer).

Title: ‘The cathedral, a religious and political building?’ / ‘De kathedraal een religieus en politiek gebouw?’

The Cathedral of Saints Michael and Gudula is the main place of worship for the Catholic religion in Brussels, both historically and today. But it is much more than that. Along with the Town Hall, it is undoubtedly the city’s most iconic historical monument. From the origins of Brussels in the 18th century, religion and politics were inseparable, and this is reflected both in the construction and use of the building.
