In the 14th century, Jean van Ruysbroeck (1293-1381) was a canon of the Collegiate Church of Saint Michael and Saint Gudula for 25 years. He was a great mystic who preached sobriety and reminded the church of its vocation to serve the poorest. He is known for his writings such as “The Spiritual Espousals” (Geestelijke Brulocht) and is considered the founder of the Dutch language.
In this sculpture, Jean Van Ruysbroeck awaits divine inspiration. He holds a tablet and a stylus, and his right foot rests on the head of a woman, probably Bloemardinne, a contested figure of the time.
Behind the statue, there is a copper plaque reminding us that the great painter Roger de la Pasture (1399-1464) is buried here.
